We have now re-opened applications for Sound and Music Summer School 2020 and the few remaining places will be allocated on a case by case basis. Given the current situation surrounding COVID-19, we have decided to run the week as an entirely digital learning experience.

This means that you will be able to take part in an intensive and inspirational week, connecting with your professional tutors and musicians online.

If you have any questions, please get in touch with us directly. For more details on the application process and what you'll need, please see our 'How to Apply' section.

What is it?

The Sound and Music Summer School is a week-long residential that gives you the opportunity to explore and develop your musical creativity. Whether you’re into songwriting or jazz, film music or classical, this is your chance to take things to the next level. Be inspired by professional composers, musicians and your peers; experience new areas of musical creation from composing for moving image to writing for the voice and expand the limits of your imagination!

How does it work?

During the residential, you’ll be able to work in your own style of music-making, whilst also working with other composers and musicians to explore new and different ways of making music. At the end of the week, your new piece of music will be performed by professional musicians and you’ll receive a recording of the piece of work you have created!

Who is it for?

SaM Summer School is for young composers and creative musicians aged 14-18. You need to be a UK resident or a UK citizen living overseas. As this is such a unique week, we may give priority to people who haven’t been before over those who have attended two previous Summer Schools.

Where, when, how much?

This year, because of the current social distancing rules, we will be running the Summer School in a totally digital format. This means that you will be able to take part in an intensive and inspirational week, connecting with our tutors and musicians online. There will also be time to connect with your fellow young composers virtually too!

The week still takes place from the 2 – 8 August 2020 and we have adjusted the cost of the Summer School to £250. We know that many families' finances have been hit hard in current times, so there are bursaries available to anyone who needs help with the cost.

Need some support?

We are determined that everyone who is accepted on the course should be able to attend regardless of their family’s financial circumstances. We are also highly conscious that many families may have lost income as a result of the coronavirus lockdown, and want to ensure we support you wherever we can. Contact us if you would like more information on how we can help.

We are also committed to being inclusive of young disabled people, those with learning difficulties and other access requirements. You are welcome to get in touch at any point in the application process to have a chat about how we can best help you make the most of the week. Visit our Contact and Support page.

Want to apply?

Applications for 2020 have now re-opened; please see our 'How to Apply' page for more information. You’ll need to provide us with some information about yourself and your experience as a composer or music creator, and have a piece of music in a written format to share with us.

Please contact education@soundandmusic.org for further information on the application process, or for questions about our virtual Summer School.
